Prints – Going… going….

•January 17, 2015 • Leave a Comment

Perhaps? Maybe not. I really don’t know.

Here is the deal. I have been listing my prints with the lovely folks at Prints on Wood. I like their printing. I like their ethics. I like that it doesn’t cost me anything to list with them (I get a percentage if the prints sell). Up until now Prints on Wood has let us list our prints with them with no limitations. They are now getting too popular to do that anymore. So for right now they are going to be limiting the number of prints that any one artist can have on the site. It sounds like the next step after that will be to cull the artists that are not selling enough prints (it costs them server space to hold all of those files for us).

So what does this mean to you? It means that if you want one of those prints, you might want to get it soon. I will be pulling some of the images as I make new ones and if I don’t sell enough they may pull me off the site.

Not sure if this counts as a shameless plug or just a heads up – but either way it is what it is. The following prints were added today. I apologize to those of you who had asked me to have the Rochester Hummingbird online before Christmas. If you still want it, it’s there now.

Thanks for your support,

No one I would rather go Trespassing with (or the Iola Tuberculosis Sanitarium Outing)

•December 28, 2014 • Leave a Comment

So here is the other day’s outing that we were looking for and had never posted. I think I had mixed feelings at the time about posting it. We were most definitely not supposed to be there. In addition, neither one of our spouses is really thrilled when they find out we have been out exploring abandoned places without them and/or some other suitable defense system. In this instance it was a spur of the moment trespass and we didn’t have good shoes (or much further exploration would have occurred). Fortunately at that point my camera was still working and I did have it with me. So here is some of what we discovered at the Iola Tuberculosis Sanitarium. I have heard that it has since been torn down so I am extra glad we went in.

Iola Tuberculosis Sanitarium My favorite photos are these shots down the hallways. So much history. So many questions. You can definitely see from these photos why hiking boots would have been a grand idea. You can also see why they would have torn this down. Not much chance of re-purposing the building at this point.  hallway inviting hallway window debris hallway IMG_0718  Of course where there are abandoned places there is graffiti.in a box Grafitti grafitti grafitti broad daylight bombing IMG_0724 IMG_0725 Love the texture of peeling paint. peeling paint Some stairs I probably wouldn’t have tried out even if I had better shoes.  dangerous stairwelland some really inviting stairs… intact stairwell An example of just bad graffiti  bad grafitti Hell's Angel IMG_0730 IMG_0731 IMG_0732 Would have liked to find the area underneath these. I really like when they do this in old buildings and subways and what not to let the light in below. In has a weird quality of light that nothing else can quite capture. Especially on an overcast day like this was.  IMG_0733 IMG_0734 IMG_0735 IMG_0736 IMG_0737 IMG_0741 IMG_0742 IMG_0743 IMG_0744 IMG_0747 IMG_0748 IMG_0749 Would have been happy to have gone home with any of these old doors. IMG_0750 Clearly lots of people had been heading into the basement from here. But once again since this was an impromptu adventure there were no flashlights either. enter the basement IMG_0752 The idea of a studio with a bank of windows like this appeals to the artist in me. Of course the practical part of me would never want to have to pay the heating bill!IMG_0753 IMG_0755 IMG_0756 IMG_0758 IMG_0759 IMG_0760 These doors were tempting. They were in great shape, easy to get to and in a place where I could have pulled the truck pretty close to grab them. I obsessed over them for several days afterwards. I tried to comfort myself by imagining having to explain why I had been arrested for trespassing and theft for taking doors that I could probably find on a curb for free. Looking at the photos part of me still regrets not having gone back for them.  IMG_0761 IMG_0762 IMG_0763 IMG_0764 IMG_0765 IMG_0766 IMG_0769 IMG_0771 IMG_0772 IMG_0773 IMG_0774 IMG_0776

If you google “Iola Tuberculosis Sanitarium” there are a lot of other great photos of this place out there on the internet and some of them include history on the place as well.

Happy exploring and remember to keep good hiking shoes (and flashlights) in your car. (Or perhaps you could remember to stay out of condemned buildings, but I personally have no intention of following that advice)

Monroe County Hospital

•December 28, 2014 • 5 Comments

A friend of mine who has been mentioned here on my blog on several occasions (you may recall the day that she saved me from the side of the expressway) has just actually discovered this blog and started reading it. She previously wasn’t a big internet sort of lady but was cunningly coaxed in via ebay. She called me last night and asked specifically about a couple of outings that we had taken that she couldn’t locate here.

Trying to be helpful I wandered around for a bit trying to figure out what I would have named those entries. Turns out I had never posted either one. So here for you (way after the fact) is one of those outings.

This was a trip around the outside of the Monroe County Hospital. I have always loved this building. It has Rochester’s best collections of gargoyles (that I am aware of – if there is another good place somewhere – PLEASE let me know) and the architecture is distinctive and varied.

I am mostly interested in the Gargoyles, so that is what most of the photos are of.

These guys are all just hanging out and reading. Or pretending to read.

Looks to us like he is hanging out in his “office” reading the paper and talking on his cell phone.  Bug's Gargoyle This temple just really doesn’t seem to fit with anything else in the place, but maybe it’s all just random. temple? columns coulumn again Again, this owl must have been there for a reason, but hard to say what that might have been. I would love to learn more about the history of this place. Maybe we should send over Chris from Exploring Upstate who actually does research on the places he visits instead of just taking pictures 🙂

The hospital is still open and functioning and you can walk around the grounds anytime that you would like. It is better if it is nice out of course. I would suggest a camera that can zoom in as some of these gargoyles are hard to get near to. There is also what looks like a temple on the top of the building that I didn’t take photos of this day because we were too close to the building to see it.

Hope this helps correct for my oversite and I will post the other outing shortly.

For the rest of you the tattoo and painting photos will be back shortly.

We’re Gonna Break the Internet

Too much has happened the last couple of weeks. Some of it will be here. Some of it will not.

Today is the Solstice. The shortest day of the year and the longest night. Tomorrow we will return to the light – the days will get longer and things will look brighter. I wish the very best Blessings to everyone and I hope you have a warm safe place to enjoy the night surrounded by light and love.

Trusty Steed Incidentally, there are a bunch of other pieces that I had scanned to upload as well… but it turns out that they “disable” the uploading feature during the holidays. After the first of the year I will be able to add them to the site as well. So those of you that were asking about prints, if they aren’t on the site yet check back then.

Worked on Frank’s arm for a little while and got this horrible photo to show for it. He will be back and this picture was mostly taken for my benefit to remember where we are at.

Made this Satyr and Woozle tattoo for Sarah. Always enjoy her visits 🙂

Satyr and Woozle tattoo Toby had his surgery and it turns out that the mass that they removed was indeed cancer. We are hoping that they got it all and it did not appear to be into his lymph nodes. I will find out more when I go back on Monday to have his stitches out. In the meantime we have a very unhappy cat in a cone. While he was in surgery I worked on this little slate piece for a friend. She had asked for something for her garden that was more her than “just cheesy flowers”. I gave it to her today and she thinks it is too nice to put in the garden (which I think is really sweet). She said she finds these little slate signs at thrift stores all the time so I asked her to pick me up some when she comes across them. Super easy to paint on I think I would have fun making some more.

Started this Passion Flower tattoo on Natasha who sat like a trooper! I hadn’t really thought about how detailed passion flowers are and that there really isn’t any good way to simplify them for tattooing and still keep all the cool characteristics that make them so unique. There are a whole lot of really crappy tattoos of passion flowers on the internet. I am looking forward to adding the last flower and getting some healed photos of this part. It will be a beautiful and unique piece when we are finished (not that it looks bad now!) The birds are healed (I made them also).

Gretchen came in for her Grandma Mermaid tattoo. I can’t tell you how much I was looking forward to this. For a minute it looked like my eye doctor was conspiring to prevent this tattoo from happening… but despite the late start we got a great session in and got Grandma finished. Thank you Gretchen for being patient, bringing me great ideas and becoming a friend in the process.

Give Away Attempt 2.0 (Now New and Improved)

•November 27, 2014 • 29 Comments

So being new to this whole give-away thing I made some tactical errors. My thought was that I didn’t want to make anyone do anything to win – no “liking” or “reposting” or any of that nonsense that always comes across like a way to try to gain more followers. I hadn’t thought that there might be another reason for it.

I pulled names (randomly) one for here and one for Instagram and in both cases wound up with users who are no longer active. Ooops. So I tried to give stuff to two people who (while I reached out to in other ways) have no idea.

sigh

So let’s try this again.

If you comment on this post I will enter you into a random drawing to win one of the pieces of artwork pictured (your choice).  I will do the same type of thing on Instagram.

On Monday afternoon I will randomly select from the people who have commented here (and on Instagram). Whoever gets back to me first will have first dibs (between here and Instagram) and then the other gets second pick. I will mail the artwork out to them (or they can pick it up if they are local).

After that, I will get together with my chums at the shop and home – we will go through the comments and select our favorite. This is completely biased and will be based on what we are amused by. From there I will select one or two winners and again they will get their choice of artwork to have for their very own.

Hopefully this works out better than GiveAway 1.0 – if not, I will try again.

and Happy Thanksgiving to one and all 🙂

Giveaway Attempt (Bear with me here)

•November 25, 2014 • Leave a Comment

Mentioned yesterday that I wanted to do some give aways. Got a random number generator… counted. Had Stephen double check my counting.

Winner is (or may be) Suz Hughes who signed up to follow my blog 2years and 11 months ago (according to WordPress).

Suz Hughes Blog

I clicked on her blog link and it appears to have been inactive since 2012. So I will try e-mailing her as well. In the event that I do not hear back from her in the next couple of days I will try again.

I am determined to give some stuff away!

Should Suz get back to me she will have first choice on any one of the paintings or drawings below. Once I get this sorted out I will do the same thing with Instagram Followers. Same thing, whoever is picked there will get to select one of the pieces below and I will mail it to them.

The VooDoo Doll one is still wet so if anyone picks that one they will have to wait a little bit for it to dry.

Thank you again everyone for your support and hopefully I will get all this sorted out and start mailing out some free stuff 🙂

Hooray! I can be productive even if I am unsupervised!

Last Monday was the last painting class for me for a little while. I was apprehensive that I would fall back into the habit of focusing on what “has” to be done and not making time for myself and my personal art work.

So today was the first test. No schedule. No class. Lots of excuses to do other things.

Admittedly I started out last night by working on some drawings including Stephen’s request for a BlueTit in a kilt to go on the other side from the snail. Pretty pleased with this little guy although he will need to be simplified some in order to get tattooed as small as the snail is.

blue tit in a great kilt blue tit in a great kilt drawing

I did spend a little time painting this morning (after a run and then an emergency trip to one of the shops to find out what set off the alarm). Then I had to coral two of the kitties up to get them to the vet. They were not amused – but still as cute as ever.

Vet Day

Tora is okay… but Toby got scheduled for some surgery today. We aren’t going to tell him yet, he worries about these sort of things. His surgery is in two weeks and I am going to need help being distracted that day. So please get your painting and drawing suggestions to me now. It will be a rough day for me. Toby is my favorite. My mom says it’s okay to have a favorite cat – just not a favorite kid.

After the vet I got down to business (interspersed with laundry, house cleaning, dishes and visiting with a friend).

This Rochester Flower painting has been giving me fits for the longest time. I’m done (apologies to my English teacher from 3rd grade). Finished. Signed it and I am NOT going to touch it again. No matter what (well unless it got damaged?). I’m moving on to new projects. This one will be getting scanned once it is dry (now that it is finally finished really) and I will be putting prints up with the rest of them on printsonwood.

I couldn’t get a decent photo straight on which is why they have people who get paid to take photos of art work for us.hummingbird with Rochester Flower

I don’t even know when I started this one. I’m pretty sure it was when I was using the water soluble oils. I was experimenting with a limited palette. I was happy with some things about it and not others and had honestly forgotten all about it. Paul came across it and mentioned that he liked it. That was enough inspiration to put it on the list and work on it today. VooDoo Doll

I think this one is finished. I didn’t sign it as I want to make sure the darks stay as dark as I want them to be before I commit – but it’s awfully close. VooDoo Doll painting

This on had been floating around in the examination phase. I decided the only thing that really bothered me enough to change was the back wing which I glazed over and dropped back further. That’s all she wrote for this one. It will get taken in at the same time as the Rochester Flower to get scanned also. Introduction painting

Today was my first time using my new “glass palette” also known as an old bathroom window. These work great as light tables also and best of all they can be found for free if you don’t mind a little curb shopping. glass palette

This on has been getting stared at for a while also. Made some teeny tiny modifications and signed it. Will go in the pile to be scanned also. Keeper in the Woods

Tada. Palette wiped clean. Everything washed and cleaned and ready for the next time I get a day to play. Hopefully next Monday. glass palette cleaned off

I would like to thank all of you who stop by here and who read my blog or just look at the photos.

I joined a blogger group and realized that I see this whole blogging thing differently than some people do. A lot of the people in the blogging world are looking to “get” more followers and more subscribers. I’m not sure what the end goal is. Perhaps to be able to sell advertising space by having high numbers? I’m not sure.

I started this blog as a way to share my work and my thoughts. I wasn’t even sure who I was sharing with. Blogs had been described to me at that time as a kind of a diary that anyone can read.

So I put my thoughts and my art up on the web’s virtual refrigerator (which is a really really big space) and I am super excited that anyone notices it at all. I am honored that people pay attention. I am flabbergasted when people “sign up” to be notified of new posts. I am told I am supposed to offer incentives to people to sign up. That seems phony to me.
But I do want to say thank you some how. So I have decided to give away two pieces of art – they will probably be small ones as I will have to mail them and I don’t want to break the bank doing so. One randomly to someone who is already subscribed here (I will draw again if that person winds up being a family member) and one randomly to someone who is following me on Instagram. Not to get anything from any of you – but to say thank you. Thanks for visiting my corner of the internet. Thank you for supporting me and other creatives. We need that.

Thanks 🙂

That apprentice thing again

•November 21, 2014 • Leave a Comment

I have a blog post that I wrote a while back to start touching on the subject of apprenticing. You can find it here if you are interested “Like I totally want to be a tattoo artist“.

When ever people wrote to me (or texted me) I would direct them to that and to a post by Jason Lambert from Black Cat Tattoo in Pittsburgh. There is mention of it at the bottom of the article that I linked to above.

Jason got a lot of flack over the post and eventually decided to take it down. I was really bummed because I felt it was extremely useful and well written.

Even though he took it down it has been mirrored all over the internet. Unfortunately some of the sites that are now hosting it are the kind of sites that sell tattoo supplies and/or advertise to people who do. So I don’t feel comfortable linking to them or sending people to look at them there.

I am going to copy and paste the article here so that I have somewhere “safe” to send people who are inquiring. If it is Jason’s preference I will remove the post or remove his name from it. He is the writer and I would like to respect his wishes on the matter. To protect him from further abuse about posting it originally, I am not going to direct link to his website or his blogsite. Again, I will change that if he prefers.

Before you ask for an apprenticeship….

…the answer is no.

Plus, asking me via email, facebook, or phone is super duper NO.
I get asked this a lot so I’m going to give some advice if you are looking for an apprenticeship. In return please don’t ask me more about this than im posting here, dont ask me for an apprenticeship, and don’t be a douche and just start scratching out of your garage/kitchen/”home studio”.

DO’s

1. DO get into tattooing through an apprenticeship. Sure you could ‘figure it out” the same way you could “figure out” how to defuse a bomb. Its more likely that you will blow yourself up, and in tattooing you will be fucking up on real live humans who deserve better.

2. DO start the whole process by getting tattooed yourself! I mean a LOT. Sleeves, large work, all that. No one is born knowing what makes a good tattoo, its an acquired language, you need to be exposed to it personally before you even consider tattooing others. Besides, no tattooer worth a shit will even entertain the idea of apprenticing you if you don’t show your love for tattooing.

3. DO draw a lot. Draw everything. So you have gotten that one skull down pat? great, now draw a fairy, a beaver, a motorcycle, a flower, and a face. If all you can draw is skulls then you are useless as a tattooer.

4. DO read every book, magazine, and website on tattooing you can. Learn the history and mystique of tattooing. Respect for tattooing is worth a lot to a prospective mentor.

5. DO remain open minded about every kind of tattooing. Until you have 4 or 5 years under your belt you should be willing to do any and all tattoos that come your way and each one should be the best you possibly can. If its a taz, you better be willing to make that the best fucking Taz in history. You are not too good to do tribal or barbed wire, if you are then head your ass back to Wendys and flip some burgers.

6. DO get lots and lots of work from the person you plan on asking for an apprenticeship. Someone walking in cold and asking for an apprenticeship is all take, take, take. By getting work you show the tattooer you are serious, interested, and they have a chance to spend some time with you and a chance to gauge you dedication. Don’t treat tattooing like the kind of thing you drop off an application for, this isn’t a summer job, its a whole new life, treat it that way.

7. DO be willing to sacrifice. You might have to work at the shop for free and still keep a job on the side. You might have to move to a whole different city to find someone willing to apprentice you. You might be asked to do all kinds of menial shit like cleaning, running errands, dealing with customers. You should know going in that a LOT of guys in this art/business had to deal with a ton of abuse, exploitation, and hazing and many of them believe that is the correct way an apprenticeship goes. If you cant deal with some hard work, critiques,  and ball busting, don’t even bother.

8. DO understand that to be a tattooer is the gift of a lifetime of art, fun, hard work, and constant growth. Most tattooers feel that taking on an apprentice is special, its damn near sacred. Understand and respect what a huge amount of trust and respect taking you on as an apprentice is. Its not a job, its a life, if you don’t respect that then you will let your mentor and all of tattooing down.

DON’Ts

1. DONT waste our time telling us how much you want it, how many years you have dreamed of it (especially if you are only 18), don’t tell us how “good at it” your friend/mom/baby momma thinks you would be. Talk is cheap, show us by doing not saying.

2. DONT badmouth other tattooers, even if it is your prospective mentors worst enemy. Being a shit talker is simply proof to that shop that you will one day, sooner or later, be shit talking them, too.

3. DONT ask via phone, email, internet, letter, do it in person or don’t bother. Anything else tells the tattooer that the gift of a tattoo life isn’t worth your time and personal appearance. An apprentice is an investment of time and effort, why would we give that to someone who cant even be bothered to talk to us in the flesh?

4. DONT show up without some artwork, DONT show up without some tattoos on your hide, DONT show up with an attitude.

5. DONT be surprised if you are asked to pay for your apprenticeship, especially if you don’t personally know the artist. There’s a lot of ways to weed out those who are not serious, paying for your apprenticeship is one of them. (BUT beware those shops who turn out 20 apprentices a year for money, chances are you will end up paying 5 grand to mop floors for 4 months and then get fired for some made up infraction)

6. DONT ask just anyone. Some tattooers cant tattoo, an apprenticeship with one of them is just the blind leading the blind. Educate yourself as to what a good tattoo looks like before you start asking around. In all seriousness, the book “The Complete Idiots Guide to getting a Tattoo” has some fantastic info on how to spot good work from bad. Learn the language a bit before you start asking.

7. DONT expect to start tattooing right away, there is a LOT of groundwork to do first. Lots of apprentices don’t even touch a machine for a year. No matter how good of an artist you are, tattooing is a skill acquired via repetition and practice, you will most likely be drawing a lot of roses and butterflies months before you tattoo even the most basic stuff.

8. DONT mistake the art of tattooing for an excuse to get up late, be lazy, dirty, drunk, high, or snotty. You must be your own taskmaster. A good blue collar attitude towards your apprenticeship will help you learn fast, thoroughly, and with respect from your peers. Don’t be just another snot-nosed, sideways baseball hat wearing, bigmouth tough-guy wannabe pussy-chasers. Treat tattooing like an art, not an excuse.

9. DONT be a know it all when you first go in. I promise you that anyone who has been tattooing for 7 or 8 years has forgotten more shit than you will ever know about tattooing. Don’t try to show how clever you are by dropping names of ‘famous” tattooers, trash talking , or bragging about how much your last tattoo cost.

lastly, BE CAREFUL!

1. BE CAREFUL of tattoo “schools’. They are a huge scam and not a single one is worth 2 shits.

2. BE CAREFUL of scumbag tattooers who see an apprentice as a way to get free money/labor/sex. Tattooing is wonderful, but nothing is worth being exploited, if you find yourself in that situation then get out, regroup, and start looking again. Never stay in a situation you feel is unsafe.

3. BE CAREFUL in learning the basics of cross contamination and how to maintain a safe relationship to the bloodbourne pathogens you will be encountering in tattooing. It wouldn’t hurt to read up on this stuff/take a class before you begin any apprenticeship.

4. BE CAREFUL to avoid the disease of ‘rock-starness”. Humility will carry you miles further in tattooing than all the talent in the world if its wasted on an egomaniac. Stay humble, know your real ability level, and don’t tackle stuff so far above your head that you (and your customer) will regret it.

5. BE CAREFUL of someone willing to take an apprentice who has less than 4 or 5 years under their belt. I didn’t take my (only) apprentice til i had 12 years of tattooing under my belt and almost none of us know enough about how we do what we do without many years of tattooing behind us.

Now good luck, don’t give up, and don’t fucking email me anymore about this stuff.

yer pal,

Jason

Booking Appointments

•November 18, 2014 • Leave a Comment

I know that it has been extremely difficult for you to book appointments with me in the past. I have for the last several years stopped booking appointments once the calendar year was full. This normally happened by March. This often left you waiting 6-10 months for an appointment once you had booked it. I appreciate how many of you were willing to wait and all of the wonderful tattoos that I was able to create.

What may have not been so obvious from the outside was how much pressure this created in my life. Being booked out that far caused me to miss weddings and funerals. Major events in the lives of people that I loved. When I did have to reschedule people there was enormous pressure to find them a new spot.

I’ve decided to try something new this year and while I am sure there will wind up being some kinks to work out I am hoping it will make things better in the long run. For 2015 I will only be booking one month at a time. This will allow me more flexibility and hopefully still be enough time for clients to make arrangements. Clients who have work in progress or are coming from out of town will have the ability to book slightly earlier than everyone else.

Appointment schedules will open up the first business day of the month prior to the month that is being booked. Clients with work in progress will be able to book two business days prior.

Medical client? None of this applies to you. I will have specific dates booked out each month at both of the medical offices and at the shop in Webster to accommodate you. Call for specifics.

I appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding while we implement the new procedures. Please let me know if you have any questions and thank you again for all of your support.

Apparently I skipped a week in there on my weekly updates. Here is some of what I have been up to.

Started this idea for a Fancy Cat. Fancy Cat drawing Had Painting Class last week and worked on a few different ones.

The Owl needed a few more touches. I think it is finished now – I will probably get this one scanned before I try to make prints as it is pretty dark for me to get a decent photo of.

Thought this one was finished – looked at it, decided that it wasn’t. I’m still not 100% happy with it – but am getting closer every time. A few people have asked about prints and/or the original on this one – so I would really like to get finished with it. But tweaking continues. The rodents got the most work. When I look back over photos it doesn’t seem like I got that much done during class – but I know I was painting the whole time. Rodent Painting rodent painting rodent painting rodent painting rodent painting

A short session again on Figure Drawing. No good reason for quitting early this time. Just wasn’t doing well and very distracted.

Some more work on the Fancy Cat.

Doing a lot of medical tattooing this time of the year. So most of what I have been up to I can’t show you. Did work on a favorite client and had a great visit. Sue asked me to put a bat on her shoulder. This was a cover up – which I did not have a tracing of when I made the drawing. I figured either it would work or I would modify the drawing when she came in. Worked out better than they usually do when I have a tracing. Maybe I should fake it more often.

Fancy Cat gets all finished up – scanned and a little photoshop tweaking… then off to Prints on Wood.

Back to Painting Class this morning. It’s our last class for the session and he is not offering Monday classes next session. So I will be without a class for a little while. Hopefully I can continue to make time to paint even without the structured time frame.

Continued to work on the rodent painting. Happier now, but I think this one needs at least one more session.

Made some changes on this dead bird painting that I made a while ago. I know it’s subtle, but I am happier with it now.

I’m not sure what was on this canvas originally – it’s one of the ones that I spraypainted to start over with. Hopefully this one goes better than whatever was there to begin with.
