Catching Up Again

I know that people keep saying how time just flies as you are getting older – I must be there because I am constantly asking myself how that much time could have passed already.

So here is some of what I have been up to lately. I think there are a bunch of tattoos that I neglected to post in there again so if your tattoo hasn’t shown up here yet, please don’t take it personally.

I have been busy busy busy which is good for me and I love making stuff.

This drawing came about for a couple of reasons. One I had a lot of fun drawing the cameo for Jessica’s tattoo and I wanted to try making a monochrome drawing of a cameo (blew it by adding black, but it started out just blue). Two a friend has asked me to design some bicycle themed tattoos for her. This wasn’t at all what she had in mind (and I knew that when I started drawing it), but I went ahead and made her anyhow. I am playing with making prints of this available – but haven’t really sorted out the layout at this point. bicycle lady drawing   Finished up this little flying mousie that I started at the last convention. He is scanned in and now available as prints from Prints on Wood.Winged Mousie - Moving On Ditto with the little flying bunny. Except he (she?) can be found here—-> Prints on WoodBunny Flies - Bunny Love This little squirrel got drawn because someone that that I follow on Instagram posted a little girlie squirrel and I wanted to make one too. Since I was busy scanning and uploading – this one went on Prints on Wood also. I ordered a sample print of this one on the white and was really happy with the way that it came out. Better than nuts Frank came in for another session on his left forearm. Got better photos this time and really looking forward to more work on this one. I did not make the lettering that is along the side of his arm. Progress on Frank's Arm tattoo Second session on this double cover up tattoo on Adam. Seems to be covering really well. One more session to add the wings and make sure that nothing else is peaking out anywhere that it shouldn’t be. dragon cover up tattoo dragon cover up tattoo Fancy Tail MerMouse. Just because. Now I know I am starting to sound like a broken record or just shamelessly plugging my prints…. but this one is also at Prints on Wood. I think this one may be a series. There is a cat shark in the works and another merbunny (possibly with wings – we will have to see).    fancy tail mer mouse Mitch talks me into tattooing things on him that I wouldn’t normally tattoo. But that’s one of the perks of having a tattoo artist for a GodMother. est 1993 stomach rocker tattoo Made this portrait of Navaeh on her Dad. Would really like to get healed up photos as his arm is pretty angry here.  portrait tattoo Put some (more) finishing touches on Julia’s Garden sleeve tattoo. By her own admission the top of this is a little bit tan – but I had to grab photos since I don’t know when I will get to see her again. Garden sleeve tattoo - feminine Kristine stopped in to book an appointment and went home with the mousie painting original. He doesn’t have a name yet, so she promised me she would let me know when it is figured out. Also she is going to send me a photo of him in his new home as that makes me happy. Kristine with painting And last but not least – I made a traditional(ish) tattoo for Andy. Again, not the type of work that I normally do – but Andy gets special treatment. Also it’s his stomach and since traditional tattooing is much quicker than realism it was a good choice for the area. traditional eagle tattoo stomach Off to go make more stuff. Any requests? I start back to painting class on Monday and I will need some new ideas to work on.

Figure Drawing August 24th, 2014

I only stayed for two of the three hours last night. Was feeling pretty tired and knew I had to get up super early today.

Still messing around with different media. I have the hardest time with charcoal (although Steve makes it looks so easy). So last night I just used flex pens and colored pencils. (When feeling simple, use simple tools.)

I posted almost all of these drawings on my Instagram last night, so for those of you who follow me both places this is redundant (but at least clearer).

An Octopus Sighting and some other Tattoos

Frank stopped in for another session on his forearm. We missed a couple of appointments in there. So I am anxious to get back to working on him regularly again. Think the face will be going in next time which will fill this in much more.  goat skull tattooIt’s been a while since I’ve made a Celtic cross tattoo. Not as popular as they once were and I have Starr in the Webster shop who also makes her own celtic designs. Nice and relaxing to work on if the client sits still which Devon did (surprising for anyone’s first tattoo). celtic cross tattoo Debbie came in for another session and a new tentacle added on to her octopus tattoo. This one is obviously going to be an epic piece when it is completed. I also found out that she has a big thing for special effects make-up and prop work – so if you know anyone who needs any of that done…. Let me know and I will put you in touch. in progress octopus tattoo in progress octopus tattoo Had fun with this harmonica tattoo. The harmonica belonged to his great-Grandmother. Pretty cool. Must have been an interesting lady. No good way to way to photograph this one since it wraps the inner arm. irish harmonica tattoo harmonica tattoo Tom stopped in so that I could get a healed photo of the memorial piece that he got for Steve-O a few weeks back.

As much as I talk about being antisocial and socially inept… There are people in my life who know this about me and love me anyhow.

Today some of us got together to make art together and visit. I worked on a couple of the paintings that I had started when I was at the Pagoda City Show last week. While neither one of them are finished I am happy with the progress and have a pretty good idea where I would like to take them from here.

(Thanks Mariah). If you are in to the Instagram thing – I am on there as JustTeeJay , Mariah is MariahRoseTattooist, Jesse is YogaPunx and Starr is blue_starr_art

I have been making tattoos as well, and eventually I will get around to posting those also.

Absolutely amazing show. So many old friends and some new ones as well. The line up of talent that was sitting in that room was outstanding.

Since I had spent so much time painting in Asheville I went out on a limb and didn’t even bring any tattoo equipment with me to Reading. There are a lot of reason why. I had started to type them out here and realized that it was super boring and not worth explaining. So as a friend used to say “because I can”.

I think that I have the Malefibunny all sorted out now. I am happy with her and as long as she didn’t get damaged coming home, she will get signed and be finished.

Malefibunny Malefibunny Started playing with another flying rodent. This one has wandered a little bit in direction. I will be curious to see where he lands when he finally finishes figuring out who he is.mouse painting mouse painting flying mouse painting flying mouse painting in progress flying mouse painting in progress flying mouse painting in progress flying mouse painting in progress flying mouse painting in progressIMG_8034mouse IMG_8036mouse A friend of mine (Holly, you’ve heard about her a lot). Stopped on her way down to the convention to pick up a new skull friend. While she was there she stumbled across this absolutely beautiful torso and decided to bring him into the family as well. He will be displayed in a much more fitting manner – but while he was with her in the hotel room I grabbed some reference photos.   human ribcage IMG_8075parts It’s not clear in the photos but this skull has “til death do us part” carved into the forehead. I’m sure there is a great story for that one – but it has been lost to time. I’m sure some of you creative folks could come up with some good tales to explain it.til death do us part on skull rib reflections I just love the reflections on the desk. ribs Back to painting in the booth. This one is based off of a tattoo design that I may never get to make as the young lady who requested it has found herself setting out on a big exploring journey that may not bring her back to Rochester… and if it does, she may be a changed enough person that a new design would be in order. We shall see. In the meantime I will take good care of her little bird. I’m not sure about this painted version however. I was really struggling with it and it may need to be redesigned and/or scrapped. Again, time will tell. IMG_8097bird IMG_8098bird IMG_8099bird IMG_8101bird  Rodent undergoing some more alterations. I have one of his flat pieces and haven’t been able to pick one of htese up before. and there were Prints

•August 5, 2014 • 2 Comments

Lots of people have asked me to make prints of my work. It’s a new area for me. After a bunch of research (and way more stalling and feeling confused) I have had a few of my prints professionally scanned so that I could get prints made.

Most of my artist friends tell me that the biggest problem with prints is getting them framed and ready to hang. So keeping this in mind I have opted to do my first ever prints through a company called Prints on Wood…. I bet you can guess what comes next. They print on wood! Yep, so there is no mucking about with having to have them framed or any of that nonsense. Open the package – find a spot on the wall and you are good to go. The smaller size prints even come with little wooden stands so that you can display them on a table or whatever.

I will have some of these prints made up full size and hang them in the shop so that people will be able to come in and see them and buy them in person if they prefer. Right now all I have are the small size sample ones that I had ordered to make sure I was happy with the colors and the finishes. I will be taking them with me to the Pagoda City Festival this weekend and if there are any left over I will bring them back to sell out of the shop.

I will be getting some others scanned and they will be available are prints as well. Some of them I have decided for various reasons not to sell as prints. If you are looking for one in particular let me know.

In the meantime they are available here Prints on Wood – Artist – TeeJay

Obviously the prints don’t have the watermark on them.

I also think there is a little “Like” button for facebook, so even if you don’t want to buy any prints, but you would like to be supportive – Please “Like” of “Share” from the page.

thanks!!!

Figure Drawing August 4th, 2014

It’s really nice to be getting settled back into more of a routine with the figure drawing again. I had really missed it. I am still messing around with what mediums to use. Sticking mostly with pencil again to start – I want to like the charcoal, I keep trying with the charcoal – but there is just some gap in how it works and how my brain operates. I hope to get through it at some point. In the meantime… practice practice practice. figure drawing figure drawing figure drawing female seated figure drawing seated femalefigure drawing woman's back

Some tattoos, some paintings… you know. All the usual stuff.

Made this Crimson Ghost tattoo for Chas right before he went out of town on a run. So I am curious to see how well it healed up with him being on the go and not being able to take care of it.    crimson ghost tattoo I’m having prints made of some of my paintings and am working out the details and getting sample prints done up to get the colors right before I move to full scale prints. These will be printed directly on wood, so they will be ready to hang with no framing necessary. I will let you know here when they are ready to go.  Delirium prints Got another great session in on Matthew’s back piece. One more short session to tighten things up and put the rain on and this one will be another for the History Books. Buddha Naga Muchalinda tattoo back pieceGot some time to work on my paintings a little bit. Still needs something – but I can’t sort out what it is. Might need to repaint this character into a scene or something instead of having her all by herself like this.
Was kind of surprised that someone else had to point out to me that she is a jackalope. I can be a little slow sometimes.

Figure Drawing. practice. practice. practice some more. The extended break from this coupled with the new format has made it difficult – but since it wasn’t easy before that, it’s all just still practice.   figure drawing figure drawing figure drawing figure drawing

Very honored to make this portrait of Steveo for Tom. Hoping to get healed photos. Was wonderful to hear all about Steveo while making this tattoo. I am sorry I didn’t get to meet him while he was here – but it sounds like he lived an incredibly full life for the time he had.

People have been asking me how they are holding up. So here are photos of where they are now. I think winter will be where the real damage occurs.  IMG_7869garden IMG_7870garden IMG_7871gardenIMG_7872gardenIMG_7873garden This one is faring the worst out of all of them. She warped up too much and fell so we had to put holes through the canvas board to get her back on the fence. Sorry Jewels.IMG_7874garden This one will probably fare the best as it is the expensive lead primed canvas that I bought for the Casey Baugh class.  IMG_7875garden Yesterday there were some other canvases that didn’t make the cut. I know a lot of artists burn their canvases – but this seemed to be more economical…. while still satisfying. notburnedcanvas It was nice enough out yesterday to sit outside in the yard and draw. I opted to use this time to work on the flash redraw project. This was a monthly thing – but like so many well intentioned art events seems to be falling apart. I am guessing the is will probably be the last one.       IMG_7878drawingoutside I don’t know who drew the original flash.  bird flashtraditional Bird Flash redraw

Time to toddle on off to Figure Drawing class. Hope that you had an excellent day whatever you did with it.

Been Stood Up (and I’m Happy about it)

•July 10, 2014 • Leave a Comment

Had an appointment tonight with a friend of mine who apparently has forgotten he is supposed to be here. I’m glad to have the time to get caught up on some things ( I have neglected to text him and ask where he is). I probably should feel guilty about that, but I don’t.

So here is some of what I have been up to.

I tattooed my friend Katie with the new Silverback Instablack. I have been using the black for a little while and absolutely LOVE it! this is the first piece that I made using the grey wash set that Randy is making from the Instablack. It has healed up great and I will post photos and update you when I get healed pictures.

KatieFernIMG_7547

The kitty we made a while back and is settled and healed nicely. I think that was the Stupid Black (also from Silverback).

The drawing from the McMittens Cat Lady shelter found a new home and was well received by the resident kitties.

I keep accidentally calling on Siri when I am carrying my iPad. The last time I did it I told her “I don’t need you Siri” and she responded. Cracked me up…

Holly stopped by for a visit and I was finally able to give her the Gypsy Skull painting that she called dibs on before it was even finished.

I put Alex’s daughter on his chest. This was also made with the Instablack and the Grey Wash mixes.

I started a cover-up on Adam – he did really well and I am looking forward to adding the color next time.

and I FINALLY made it back to Figure Drawing…. although I am still not happy with the format change, that may be because I am just grouchy and don’t like change. Hard to say. But I do know that when I wasn’t going I wasn’t drawing as much and definitely wasn’t doing any drawing from life – so I need to make sure to find time in my schedule to continue with this.

A little rusty, but overall not as bad as I thought it was going to be.
