Some More of The List

•December 23, 2015 • Leave a Comment

As I mentioned on the last entry- I recently asked for drawing suggestions on Facebook. Here are some more of them.

#9 – “Exotic”

ExoticCroppedSmallWM

#10 – “Atomic Dance”

Alternative plan for this one was a couple of rabbits dancing at a sock hop wearing those 50s style bubble helmets. That one may still need to happen.

AtomicDanceSmallWm

#11 – “Mermaidsaur (mermaid dinosaur)”

Mermaidsaursmwm

#12 – “Starfish yo-yo”

There were a lot of sketches for this. My conclusion is that yo-yoing as a hobby must be difficult for a young starfish. I think they could also probably stick themselves to an overhanging coral reef and yo-yo off of that. I wonder if it is easier or harder to do yo-yo tricks under water. My head is filled with these kind of questions.

StarfishYoYosmwm

#13 – “Jellyfish love”

This one went a lot of places in the thinking phase. I thought about hooking Cthulhu up with a large jellyfish. I also thought about making some creature eating a peanut butter and jellyfish sandwich. This mermaid looks suspect to me. I can’t decide if she is a matchmaker or a jellyfish pimp. Either way I think she is up to something. The jellyfish look pleased enough.

Having fun with this project and looking forward to making more of them over the vacation. Next one is “Self Animal Portrait” so depending on how involved I get, that may be a study for a painting.

If I was a good science fiction geek – I would know much more about how StarDates work than I do.

You can’t fire me from Geekdom so I will not worry about it too much. Today is another one of those “things I have been up to lately” posts. They are the hardest to name. I mean, if I included photos of my trip to the zoo… then the post would be easier to name.

But hey, I’m still making pictures and tattoos… so how about some of them?

—–

When I finished the Drawlloween Project, I was really inspired. I had liked the idea of working outside of my comfort zone and using someone else’s ideas, but not having to worry about if they liked it or not. (NOT the case when drawing for tattoos). The 24 hour deadline on top of my other workload was brutal for the month. I was super proud of myself for making it through and finishing all of them on time.

I have not been able to find another online prompt thing that worked of for me. So I made my own. I asked people to submit one or two word ideas or descriptions for me to work off of. I will do at least 30 of them. I will do them in order. I will not limit myself to 24 hours and try to do one every day.

I made my request post and drew this one while I waited for ideas to arrive. This one came from my desire to draw the little fluffy stuff that comes out of milkweed (that we have always called wishes). I didn’t think it would work well for a tattoo, so drawing was the way to go.IMG_5689makeawish

The first prompt was “Butterfly Phoenix”

IMG_5694phoenixbutterfly

I also worked on some paintings. Finally finished this one up (and started on another that I won’t post until after it has been delivered to it’s recipient).

IMG_5706treecritter

Went to Figure Drawing.

Next drawing prompt was “Winter Mold”.

IMG_5727SnowBunnyShenanigans

Followed by “Fairy Peace”.

IMG_5744SpringFling

Started this thigh piece for Kaitlyn. The horse is hers and unfortunately I can’t remember his name. She will be back after the New Year to finish the rest of it.

IMG_5762dreamcatcher

Finished the upper part of Nadine’s arm with her Mandevilla Tattoo. She and I worked together what seems like a million years ago when I had a really real job. We made the lower portion a few months ago.

IMG_5787mandevilla

IMG_5791mandevilla

Then “Tattooed Elf” which I got a little more into as far as detail then I had intended. This one took me a few days to get around to finishing.

IMG_5804tattooedfairy

“MistyWinds” This one was chosen by RedBubble to be featured on their “Found” page. Pretty cool. Definitely another example of a drawing that would not work well as a tattoo.

IMG_5828mistywinds

And a neat design that made for a very nice tattoo after it was simplified a bit.

IMG_5838elephant

“Storm Snowflake”

IMG_5842StormSnowflake

“Wizard Bat”

WizardBatCropped

“Wild Horses” which I made into RockingHorseFlies – but after I decided that they really don’t look all that wild. I figure maybe they are way out of control on weekends. This image was almost punk rock seahorses instead.

RockingHorseFliesIMG_5870

I would also like to point out to anyone who has read this far that these images are for sale. Many of them have been uploaded to my RedBubble page (link on top of the blog) and the originals are for sale as well. Most of the little ones like are here are $50 if you come pick them up and $65 if I have to mail it somewhere. A lot of people seem to think that either I don’t sell them or they are really expensive.

So if you have one of these that you are interested in (or any of the Drawlloween ones) please let me know. They aren’t doing me any good sitting in my sketchbook.

Next word prompt is “Exotic”. Have any suggestions?

I have so many wonderful people in my life. Folks who stand by me even when I am “In The Pit”. Tonight one of those people called me up and reminded me why I love her so much.

Amy gave me a bit of shit about not posting on my blog lately. Not enough of a hard time to kick in my contrary nature – just enough that I wanted to update so that she would smile and be happy.

So Amy (and Todd and Natasha and Holly and everyone else who is wonderful in my life) this one is for you. Thank you for standing by me when I don’t feel like I deserve it.

For those of you that are here for the photos updates… they will be along any second now.

——

We got almost finished on this piece. There is a cover up on the right shoulder and I did not make the fairy in the moon piece that is in the center.

Started this owl piece. Was super bummed that we couldn’t finish it that day. I thought we were doing it all at once, but alas the Universe does not ALWAYS align things to the way that I want them. Just mostly.

IMG_5336owl

Got a great first session in on this Batman sleeve. This was a full day and there are all sorts of teeny tiny bitty details in there. This is going to be a breathtaking tattoo when it is finished.

IMG_5369catwomanIMG_5361poisonivy

Stephen was able to get some healed photos of this Amy Winehouse portrait for me. I have to admit for one of the only times of my career I edited a photo in photoshop for the purpose of changing the appearance of the photo. Since this tattoo is fully healed there is hair on his leg again. Not a problem, but when we took the photos there were two perfectly (mis)placed hairs that made it look like poor Amy had giant bags under her eyes. I did take those out of this photo. Amy went through enough trials and tribulations, she doesn’t need added bags. No woman does. I didn’t edit the photo in any other way.

IMG_5376AmyWinehouse

Holly. There are always Holly stories. Holly came to town. It was glorious. We made teeny tattoos, laughed, pursued poutine, stuffed cheesecake into ourselves…. all the usual.

and Holly repaired the Filthy Whore in the Webster shop. Now she has an H. If that doesn’t make sense, don’t worry about it.

Another start on a great sleeve (which will include some cover-ups). Winter is definitely the time for starting sleeves. It seems like so much of what I have been doing lately is the beginning of giant projects.

IMG_5545dragon

And see, then the next one was an amazing one session tattoo. Nevermind. Ignore me. Just look at the pictures.

IMG_5567Sassy

Healed photo of this animal totem from a while back.

IMG_5573totem

Drawing that was inspired by a tattoo assignment, but works better on paper than as a tattoo. I did put this one up on RedBubble so you can get it on “stuff” instead of on your person.

Speaking of which it appears that a bunch of you are getting RedBubble goodies with TeeJay art on them for Christmas. Super excited that I might get to see some of them in person. It’s unbelievably fun for me to see my art walking around on things instead of skin.

IMG_5616Chrysalis

I did make it to Figure Drawing on Monday but I was really out of sorts. I left early, but got these in before I gave up for the night.

Gretchen came to see me. I love when that happens. Not only does she get tattoos that make me happy, having her around does as well.

IMG_5643Hope

and last but not at all least, Nick started this half sleeve for his first tattoo. Nothing like jumping in good and solid like. We got about half of this done on this first session and if he sits like that next time he should be finished next time. Then he gets to find out how lopsided you can feel with only one arm tattooed.

IMG_5659NFuss

Hopefully I will stay out of The Pit and you will be hearing from me more regularly again. Thank you to all of you that walk beside me in life. You mean more to me than I can properly tell any of you.

Yesterday this world suffered a loss. One of the beautiful shining humans moved from this plane to the next. This loss is tragic.

I want to talk about this loss, but not because I want or deserve your sympathy or your “I’m sorry for your loss”. This was a gain for me. Having this human in my life was a blessing. I am a better person for having known him. I am honored we were friends.

I am completely devastated for his wife. Frank and Beckie were in every way a beautiful couple. Inside and out. The kind of bright clever glowing humans that everyone should have in their life. I am sure they had their obstacles to overcome as we all do in and outside of relationships. But to be near them was to feel their love. It radiated out of them. It felt good to be around. They had a love that you read about in story books and watch in films and don’t truly believe happens to really real people. It does. I’ve seen it.

My heart breaks to think that has been interrupted for them.

The most frustrating thing about trying to “be there” for someone who is grieving is that we can’t really do anything. When a light like this has left this place their is no amount of love and light that we can pour on the survivor that will make a real difference. We can try. I can tell Beckie how much I feel for her. How my heart is hurting. How I am sitting here typing this with tears streaming down my face and am big ugly crying, but none of that will make her feel better. Nothing will right now.

I don’t have any more words.

Drawlloween 2015

•October 19, 2015 • Leave a Comment

Normally I wait until a blog post is complete to post it. By the time I am finished with this drawing challenge, October will be over and it won’t be as fun to be posting Halloween drawings. So I am posting this now and will add the new drawings on to the end.

Somewhere around the end of the month I will post an Instagram only give-away thing. Then on November 1st (or 2nd) I will draw three names from those that entered (on Instagram only) and will give those three people their choice of the drawings. After that the balance of the original images will be for sale. Many of them are on RedBubble and more of them will be added. If the drawing that you like best isn’t on RedBubble, let me know and I can make sure that it gets uploaded.

Thank you everyone for your ongoing support.

On October 1st my sister posted this on my Facebook page.

Drawlloween 2015

I had seen drawing challenges like this one before, but this time I decided to give it a go. It was too late at night by the time that I saw it to try to draw “ghost” that first day. So for my first day (on the 2nd) I combined Ghost and Devil and made this little guy being haunted by the ghosts of his past.

Guilty Owl

Day 3 – Goblin. Not sure why, but I decided that Goldberg Tribal tattoos would be popular in the Goblin Realm as well.

Goblin with Bunny

Day 4 – Vampire. I was actually surprised that more people didn’t ask me why this was a Vampire. Either people recognized the reference or they didn’t care that much.
I drew most of this while Paul was driving us to NC to meet our new Granddaughter. Drawing in a moving vehicle is not all that easy and I don’t know that I could have pulled it off if I was not used to compensating for wiggly clients.

Vampire Bunny

Day 5 – Werewolf. So having babies on the brain – it made me wonder how hard it would be to deal with having a were-pup. I guess if you and/or your spouse are a werewolf you would already know how to handle it.

werewolf pup

Day 6 – Pumpkin. Squirrel wants to eat the pumpkin. Pumpkin wants to eat the squirrel.

Pumpkin Patch

Day 7 – Haunted House. This was hard for me. I didn’t want to draw a house. Houses have too many straight lines and need to actually look like they could stand. Frustrating when one just wants to make things up… but when I came up with this one and realized I could have an excuse the use the hash tag #ghostfart – it made it all worthwhile. Yes, I really am that childish.

Snail House

Day 8 – Zombie. Certain friends and I will talk once in a while about our aversion to wet dead (as opposed to dry dead). I do fine with dry dead. Taxidermy. Bones. Things that are dry, don’t squish and don’t look like they would smell badly. Zombies do not fall into the dry dead category. Therefore I am not nearly as enamored with zombies as some of my friends tend to be. I think that my winged merbunny would feel the same way. I believe that if she found herself turned in a zombie way, she would make every attempt to try and make the best of the situation.

zombunny

Day 9 – Eyeball. This one just seemed like an obvious choice to me.

eyeball rose

Day 10 – Alien. I hadn’t really thought too much of it before, but those hummingbird feeders really do look like little red UFOs. Made me think about the scene in HitchHiker’s Guide to the Galaxy where an entire attack force is eaten by a dog. Aliens might not be big and scary. They might be little and scared.

Very Small Alien encounters Hummingbird

Day 11 – Raven. Not going to explain this one. It kind of happened and I couldn’t really explain the thought process to you. After it was drawn it occurred to me that it might be a raven with a woman as it’s Spirit Animal.

Raven Girl

Also after I drew her I felt like she didn’t quite “go” with the rest of the series. So I drew something that I thought might be more in line with the rest of the images. Apparently no one noticed as I got a lot of positive feedback on the first one, and almost none on the second.

baby raven

Day 12 – Moon. Pretty cool as we just had a full moon lunar eclipse here recently and lots of us were outside wandering around staring at the full moon.

Incidentally I had told someone very recently that only boy bunnies have antlers. Very obviously I was mistaken. Any bunny can have antlers 🙂

Moon Bunny Jackalope

Day 13 – Frankenstein. I have enough literary folks in my life that I have learned that what most people think of when they think of Frankenstein is incorrect. Most people picture Frankenstein’s Monster. Frankenstein was the Doctor’s name. This is Frankenkitty. He is trying to figure out how to bring the mice back so that they can keep playing together. It’s hard when your friends suddenly stop moving on you.

Frankenkitty

Day 14 – Bat.

Bat Bunny

Day 15 – Amulet. The only thing I could think of for amulet was the necklace that Mrs Brisby had in the Secret of NIMH. I kind of felt badly for Jeremy the Crow that he didn’t get a sparkly. I mean, I know he couldn’t have THAT sparkly – but I know what it is like to covet a sparkly. So for my amulet drawing I gave Jeremy his own.

Jeremy has a Sparkly

Day 16 – Grave. My favorite grave carving is an angel sculpture is from the Oneto Family Tomb and was carved by Monteverde. She is beautiful. This is a bunny version.

MonteverdeBunnywm

Day 17 – Demon. The obvious choice as a tattoo type of human would be to draw a Hannya. I didn’t.

Demon Mosquito

Day 18 – Mask. Again, could have gone with a Hannya. Instead I did a fan art piece of one of Chiara Bautista’s characters. I really love her work a lot and would like to imagine the critters that live in my brain would play really nicely with the ones in her world. Absolutely beautiful work that makes me want more time to draw for me.

Chiara Bautista Fan Art by TeeJay

Day 19 – Creature from the Black Lagoon. I have to admit that I have never seen this movie. I’ve seen the images and the posters and I’ve never felt the need to sit down and watch it. I kind of figure some blonde jock dude spears the creature and he swims off never to be seen of again (or possibly until the sequel). I don’t like stories that go that way. I would like to imagine the creature was able to find someone who appreciated him for who he is was (perhaps after he did some soul searching and/or therapy to deal with any anger issues or homicidal tendencies).

creature from the black lagoon and mrs creature

Day 20 – Skull. Of course I love drawing skulls. There are never enough skull projects. This one is finished enough for this project (and the time that I had to work on it) but I would like to go back into it at some point and add to it a bit.

SkullIMG_4981

Day 21 – 8 Bit-Zombie. My original vision for this one was a couple of zombies hanging out on a couch playing old school video games. It’s a great vision in my head, but there was no way I had enough time to make something that elaborate in the time that I had.

8 bit zombie carrot

Day 22 – Candy. When I was a kid my mom didn’t want me to get sick off of all of the Halloween candy – so she rationed it out. Usually one piece a day with my lunch and maybe another piece at dinner time. It was a great plan except because I knew she was going to do this, I would eat as much of it as I possibly could before I got home. Usually making myself good and sick in the process. These guys look pretty pleased with themselves. I think they “regret nothing”.
This is the one piece so far that I really want to keep. If it survives the give away I will. I may hold it back from the give away. I’ll see when we get there.

too much candy

Day 23 – Gore. I couldn’t bring myself to make anything gory. Wet dead does not do it for me. I went for the verb gore instead of the noun gore.

gore monster drawing with pumpkin and bunny

Day 24 – Skeleton. I couldn’t decide if I wanted to go with an actual skeleton or a skeleton key for simplicity. Ultimately I decided to do both. I really like this piece a lot, but would like to go back into it at the end of the month to add more detail and contrast when I have more time.

skeleton drawing with jackalope and key

Day 25 – Mummy. One of the ones I really felt like I had to use a human for. When I went to look for reference for the jars I couldn’t remember what they were called. Fortunately googling “tomb jars” worked perfectly. I love when google thinks for me. Obviously I did not use the traditional heads for the jars.

MummyIMG_5082

Day 26 – Rat. I believe that I like rodents more than the average person does.

fairy rat

Day 27 – Witch. I had a friend who kept saying she was looking forward to this one most. I felt pressured. I was so worried she wouldn’t like what I came up with. Fortunately she did 🙂 A few people have told me this one was their favorite for the month.

Young Witch

Day 28 – Black Cat. My original intention was to make a Reaper Kitty. The logistics didn’t work out well. I had a hard time getting the robe to hang right with ears poking out and without them it didn’t look like a kitty. Plus I wanted the kitty to be holding a scythe and it didn’t look right. In the midst of all of this my kitty Tora curled up next to me on the couch for a few minutes. Not long enough for me to get a really good drawing, but long enough to get a shape to work with. He is lanky and bony since he is a very old kitty. Now he is a Kitty Bat. For the record he is all black with no pink, but I wasted some contrast in the drawing.

Kitty Bat

Day 29 – Scarecrow. Years ago I made a Scarecrow Pin-up for a Scratch(board) Art book. I at first tried to make another pin-up but wasn’t feeling it. This happened instead.

Scarecrow Ballerina

Day 30 – Spider.

love bites

Day 31 – Dragon. The last prompt of the project. I’m tired at this point. A lot has happened this month. I have learned a TON and I am really proud of myself for having made it all the way through it. On time even! I am looking forward to a slightly more regular sleep schedule moving forward from this point. I hope to continue drawing all be it not so prolifically and go back to painting more.

Dragon settling down for nap

Thank you for taking this journey with me. I will select the winners of the three originals of their choosing on Sunday. Most of these are on RedBubble (link at the top of page). A couple of them are too big to scan so I will have to have someone else do it. Then they will be here as well. The balance of the originals will be for sale after the winners have selected theirs (and the family has grabbed the ones they want dibs on).

What is all this business about the tattooing law?

•October 2, 2015 • Leave a Comment

Tattoo Set-Up

I have to admit that I got worked up about our new tattooing law and may have not done a very good job of explaining why. First a couple of things that seem to have been missed by people who have been following this.

  1. This is not pending legislation. This is a law that has been passed. We are fighting to have that law amended before it begins to be enforced.
  2. If this law stays as it sits currently many of us will be unable and/or unwilling to follow it. We will be forced to break the law to protect our clients or no longer tattoo in New York state.
  3. We need the public to reach out to Representatives so that they understand the impact this has on not only the practitioners but the public as well.

So what are the problems. First Problem:

Section 1.  Section 460 of the public health law is amended by  adding
two new subdivisions 10 and 11 to read as follows:
10. “SINGLE USE INK” SHALL MEAN A SEALED AND PRE-FILLED PACKAGE OF INK
THAT IS ONLY INTENDED FOR A SINGLE USE.
11.  “SINGLE  USE NEEDLE” SHALL MEAN A SEALED AND STERILE PACKAGE OF A
DISPOSABLE NEEDLE.

Pre-filled packages of ink are not a standard in the industry. They are sold in two forms. One is like a little pillow pack (think condiment package) that is torn open and the individual portion of ink poured out for use. The other is a pre-filled “ink cap” with a peel back lid. These forms of packaging require the addition of binders and additives to keep the particles of pigment dispersed. These additives are untested by professionals in the industry. Up until the introduction of this legislation the only practitioners interested in inks packaged in this manner were unprofessional/unlicensed tattooers who only planned on tattooing a buddy or two. As such these single use pre-filled packets are only made by shady supply companies. None of the trusted pigment suppliers package ink this way.

I personally would not use any of the brands that are available (in a package that would comply with this law) on a human being.

The other problem with the legislation that has now passed is the very vague use of the worlds sterile and all.

S 2. The public health law is amended by adding a new section  467  to
read as follows:
S  467.  SINGLE  USE TATTOO AND BODY PIERCING EQUIPMENT. 1. ALL TATTOO
STUDIOS AND BODY PIERCING STUDIOS MUST ENSURE THAT SINGLE USE  INKS  AND
SINGLE  USE  NEEDLES ARE USED IN ALL TATTOO AND BODY PIERCING PROCEDURES
PERFORMED IN SUCH ESTABLISHMENTS.
2. PRIOR TO A PERSON RECEIVING  A  TATTOO  OR  BODY  PIERCING  FROM  A
LICENSED TATTOOIST OR BODY PIERCING SPECIALIST, SUCH PERSON AND LICENSED
TATTOOIST  OR  BODY PIERCING SPECIALIST MUST SIGN A FORM CONFIRMING THAT
THE TATTOOIST OR BODY PIERCING SPECIALIST:
A. PRESENTED ALL SINGLE USE MATERIALS IN A STERILE AND SEALED PACKAGE,
THAT ARE TO BE USED DURING THE TATTOO OR BODY PIERCING PROCEDURE, TO THE
PERSON RECEIVING SUCH TATTOO OR BODY PIERCING; AND
B. OPENED ALL SINGLE USE MATERIALS THAT ARE  TO  BE  USED  DURING  THE
TATTOO  OR  BODY  PIERCING  PROCEDURE  INCLUDING NEEDLES, INKS AND OTHER
INSTRUMENTS IN THE PRESENCE OF THE PERSON RECEIVING SUCH TATTOO OR  BODY
PIERCING.

Looking specifically at the phrase “all single use materials in a sterile and sealed package”. This sounds like a great idea if by all they mean the needles and tubes. Which most definitely should be presented in a sterile package to be opened in front of the client. It has been industry standard to do this since before I began tattooing in 1991.

Unfortunately it doesn’t specify what they mean by all. If they try to enforce this as all single use items, it would include many single use disposable barriers and consumables that are used in every tattoo set up. Much like other fields concerned with cross contamination, we liberally use single use disposable items. Included but not limited to:

  • The ink caps which are at the center of most of the debates on this law.
  • Plastic barriers to cover machines.
  • Plastic barriers to cover spray bottles.
  • Plastic sleeving to cover clip cord.
  • Work surface barriers.
  • Barriers to cover power supply and any adjustment knobs or buttons.
  • Lift films to cover lights or chair adjustment points.
  • Wipes used for cleaning tattoo.
  • Tissues used for opening ink bottles.
  • Drapes to cover chairs or tables.
  • Barriers to keep skin from contacting supports such as arm rests.
  • Prep razors
  • Ointments for lubricating the skin during tattooing.
  • Gloves

Of course you are probably thinking “Well, why would anyone try to enforce all of those items being sterile and sealed in a package? That’s completely unreasonable. It makes no sense.”. You would be completely correct in this thought. But here we are with a passed law that is mandated the use of dangerous untested pigments on the public. Break the law, or harm your clients. So how unreasonable is it to believe that some well meaning inspector could take “all single use materials” to actually mean all single use materials.

Oddly enough as this reads now it would be more in compliance to just reuse items such as clip cords, razors, spray bottles without bagging them as then the item would no longer be single use and therefore not need to be presented in a sterile manner.

The law needs to be changed.

  • Specification for needles and needle guides (commonly referred to as tubes) to be sterile and packaged and opened in front of the client is completely reasonable (current wording does not mention tubes).
  • Specific mandates of pre-filled single use inks needs to be removed. Preferably replaced with a statement that pigment should be dispensed into single use disposable containers.
  • “All single use materials” needs to specify which individual items (such as needles and tubes) instead of using “all”.

What can you do to help?

Ink Caps for Tattooing

It matters (an open letter to New York State and our Representatives)

•September 18, 2015 • 4 Comments

Tonight I was afforded the opportunity to help another woman heal. The opportunity to walk with a breast cancer survivor through the last phase of her reconstruction.

A beautiful vibrant woman drove three hours today with her husband to my studio in Western New York. She did this to have me tattoo nipples on her to replace the ones that cancer has taken. She has had enough of surgeries. She came to me from three hours away for my expertise. What is that you ask? I create the illusion of natural nipples for mastectomy patients. It is the last step of a long reconstructive process. It is the final piece that helps make them feel comfortable again.

I will often joke with these women that part of my job is to make them invisible again in a locker room. To blend in. To feel just like everyone else. Nothing worth staring at. Nothing different. Just another woman changing her clothes. The tattoos that I make for them do that. They take away from the scars. These tattoos help heal. These tattoos change lives. These tattoos help women feel sexy again.

You may not think that these things matter, but to more women than you could know – it does. It matters. It makes a difference.

Why am I telling you this? Because as NYS Bill S-1421-2015 stands now and with the colors that are available to me to use under these guidelines – I will be unable to continue with this work. I will be unable to tattoo these women anymore.

The color palettes available are too limited for the subtle color nuances that are necessary to make this process work. With every patient I spend a very long time (often more than an hour) mixing colors and altering them ever so slightly to work and blend on their skin. I will lay out a palette of 19 colors and normally pull from at least 8 for a conventional reconstruction and often 10-12 for a 3d illusion procedure.

Here is the palette that I set up for each and every patient.

tattoo colors in individual ink caps

I know there are a lot of names on the petition. I know you as legislators have a lot on your minds. This Bill may not be that big of a deal to you – but to a lot of us it matters. It matters a lot.

Not for the reasons that you may think, but for reasons that you may have not thought of.

I would like to continue to be able to do this work in my home state. I would like to continue to help women heal. I would like to be a part of that – because it matters. Please keep this in mind when you are reviewing the petitioned changes that the tattoo community is presenting.

It matters.

————————-

For anyone who is curious this is the “after” shot of the pigments that I used. Not a lot of color gone, but more than half of the colors were used. Only a couple of 3cm diameter tattoos – but a whole lot of difference in one woman’s life.

A lot has been written about this and I don’t know that I personally have much to add to the discussion. I did want to post a few relevant items here however.

To whom it may concern:

I am writing to address the newest legislation that was just signed concerning the tattoo industry in New York State, specifically the regulation of pre-packaged single use inks.

I am not a tattoo artist, I am a customer. I have used the services of three different artists, and been in a handful more shops. My current and favorite artist has created several tattoos for me. I have been able to see her standard operating procedures on at least ten separate occasions ranging from five to eight hours each. I have also seen her work on another customer, and watched other artists in her shop with their own clients.

My artist has successfully owned and operated her tattoo business for over twenty years. She has opened a second shop, employs several artists, and has educated several apprentices that have gone on to be wonderful artists in their own right. I have also been able to see her work in other shops as a guest artist.

I am not a medical professional; but have had training through my work, university and LMT education in safe SOP’s, health and safety, and blood borne pathogens. I understand both the risks and the appropriate precautions that need to be used to assure the safety of myself, my artist, and the customers who would come after me.

My artist maintains the highest level of health and safety in her shop, and holds all of her artists and apprentices to the same level of care. I have watched her set up our work station every time, and I always watch her open the single use needles, and see her check them under magnification to make sure they are acceptable. She maintains safety standards with barriers, coverings and gloves as do all of her artists. I have heard her educating her apprentices in safety, and on my last visit I even got to hear the new guys talk amongst themselves about good practices and cleanliness. At the conclusion of tattooing I have also had occasion to observe the break down. I have seen all the used ink cups and needles disposed of, and watched the cleaning of the station; each time to my complete satisfaction.

I have had several large pieces that use a great quantity and variety of ink. My artist has large bottles of ink that are used to fill the small throw away cups. She always uses the disposable ink cups and they are dispensed in a way that prohibits cross contamination. We have discussed the inks she uses, and the companies available to purchase from; both good and bad. Over the past couple of years, I have had many questions and she has always been knowledgeable and forth right with information.

On my last appointment we talked about this new legislation and the problems that will arise from it if it goes through as currently worded. She told me that the companies that currently make the single use ink shots are of a lower and/or questionable quality, and she uses a much higher ink with proven safety records. I only have second hand information on the ink qualities, but I trust my artist. I did a lot of research to find someone I trusted with my safety!

My part of the discussion centered on the added cost burden of individual one use packaging of ink. My pieces are richly colored, with a lot of variety. The amount of different inks used in each of my tattoos is really high, and I can imagine the cost of all those colors in tiny individual packages would be grossly cost prohibitive. During our conversation, I likened the individual inks to the food stuff in restaurants. I imagine that if restaurants had to follow the same restrictive guidelines on their condiments or side dishes, and had to have individually packaged pickle containers for each hamburger ordered; none of us could ever afford to eat out. Imagine a  deli that had to order bread in individually sealed packs of two, just the amount for an individual sandwich. To be even sillier, imagine someone wants a club; the server would have to open another package of two, and then dispose of the extra piece since it would not be used for this diner. Instead, all restaurants follow safety and contamination guidelines, and they buy their food in economical bulk sizes and dispense safely.

If this legislation goes through as worded, my artist would be forced to use lower quality inks; and the cost of my work would be astronomical. Good quality tattoo artists that don’t take shortcuts will be forced out of their living because a tattoo would become too expensive for most customers to have. There would also be a rise in the amount of people trying to make a tattoo on their own, at the kitchen table with friends because they could not afford to get a tattoo in a regulated shop. This will lead to more infection and disease, because these non-professional untrained people have no knowledge in safety and cross contamination.

I will conclude by saying that I do not know the wording that should be used in legislation, but I urge you to do your due diligence in the field you are attempting to regulate. I believe you have a duty to the community, and you would do a disservice to us all if you did not go into the field and speak to the artists themselves. I have met many wonderful, articulate and safety minded tattoo artists that would be a real asset in your education into the safe tattoo, please find them!

I thank you for your time, and hope that these words will help make positive change instead of detrimental legislation.

As I have mentioned my computer isn’t liking me these days. Well, that’s not actually true. My computer may like me just fine, it doesn’t however like to upload anymore. It will, but it doesn’t like it. Often it will seize up and do absolutely nothing if I ask it to upload. I take this as a form of protest. I’m not sure what exactly it is trying to protest. Perhaps that will come out later.

So anyhow, things haven’t been going so well with updating the blog because of this.

We have had a nice long sit down and seem to be at an understanding. So for the time being uploading seems to be possible. While this is the case, I will attempt to fill you in on some of the tattoos that I have made and worked on since we visited last.

Added some background to Bernie’s leg to brighten it up. We had done the dagger/snake and the eagle in mostly browns and neutral tones and since the work on the other lower leg was so bright, we added some more color to balance them out. Sorry I did not get photos all the way around the leg so you can’t really see the eagle tattoo. background for Bernie tattoo on leg

Everyone has seen tattoos that were done from children’s drawings…. but Gerry had a great idea to put his son’s drawing on an easel to make it more interesting with “something else” in there as well. Went with the crayons (even though his son pointed out that he had done his drawing with markers) and some paint splatters. When I went to make the stencil up I realized the piece looked unbalanced (from the easel leaning, you know, like easels do). I got a hold of Gerry to see if there was another element we could add. There was! His son (also named Gerry) had a giraffe that he wanted in there. Giraffe hides behind easel… perfect! kid's drawing tattoo Gerry's drawing Gerry's drawing  I’ve never actually read or watched Gone with the Wind, so I don’t know too much about the story. I now however know that Vivien Leigh had blue eyes and someone had to alter the film so that her eyes would appear green to play Scarlett. Aren’t you glad that your job doesn’t involve hand tinting eyes in every single frame of a film? Scarlett tattoo Added on to Kent’s arm. He is going to let me make a mermaid for him next. Yay for mermaids!!! Obviously the ship is healed at this point. sea serpent tattoo Second session on Justin’s underwater piece. Super excited about this one. He sits great and this will run up the arm on to the chest when we are finished.  Underwater reef tattoo My friend Michelle has been a Dead Head since before I knew her. I really like this interpretation of the classic Steal Your Face. She also has plans to continue this around the leg some more.  rose and butterfly steal your face tattoo So I often talk about Holly. If you have spent a lot of time here or at the shop with me you have probably heard a Holly story or seen a Holly sticker or asked about a Holly stress boob. Anyhow, Holly contacted me a while back and said she had a client who wanted me to put nipples on her butt cheeks. Would I be interested? But of course! (bad pun intended). Chandra had plans to come to Rochester one time when Holly was in town visiting, but Mother Nature had some other plans and we got hit with some pretty serious snow. I had figured that was the end of my chances at butt nipples…. but then. Another opportunity! Holly was going to be working on Chandra at the Pagoda City Tattoo Festival. I could come down for the day – visit with a couple of awesome people – get to see a ton of friends and finally make the requested nipples. Everyone wins! So this happened. Some great laughs. Some interesting photos. Some very confused onlookers. It was a great weekend!  ass nipple tattoos I don’t know who made the “Something Silly” tattoo. She and her sister have matching ones.  teejay tattooing ass nipples teejay tattooing nipples on a butt  wiping Chandra's back side Rob came to town for another sit on his Mountain Unicycle Riding Knight and Dragon tattoo. I am willing to wager this may very well be the only tattoo in the world with this particular theme. I am going to believe it until someone proves otherwise to me. This is actually pretty close to finished on what was the original plans for the tattoo – but since we have started some new plans have been thrown into the mix. Robi sits like a rock and we are able to get a lot done on each session. I’ll be sad when this one is finished – but I am sure he will be thrilled to have me stop poking holes in his stomach and sternum!  full moon and mountain unicycle knight tattoomountain unicycle knight tattoomountain unicycle knight and dragon tattoodragon facing off mountain unicyle riding knight tattoo mountain unicyle and knight tattoo So Gretchen was in town. One: I have to tell you that I love this lady. Have a great time with her everytime I get to see her face. Probably would get super sick of me if we lived closer. Two: this cat is awesome! This is Ashley aka Miss Crank Pants and I am sure she must be my spirit animal. I hope that I was able to capture the essence of her irritation. Also please not the teeny mice in the tiara.  kitty tattoo

First tattoo. One sit. Lots more layers of color than you can really see in this photo. celtic cross tattoo

Little add on to an ongoing project. Pocket watches are one of those trends in tattooing that I really don’t mind. There are so many ways to make them different from each other and  a lot of people get the times to represent specific dates. Works much better visually than just writing a date on your arm. pocket watch tattoo We did a short sit on Casey’s torso to finish up the outline and to give him a taste of what the shading will be like. This one is going to be amazing. Again, I am sure he will be happy when it is all finished. Do not be fooled folks. Getting this portion of your body tattoos is painful and invasive. These guys are troopers. I don’t know if I could do it.  satyr skull tattoo outline Skull tits! I have the most amazing friends. We weren’t sure how bad this was going to feel – so on the first sit we only did the one skull. Nadia said it really wasn’t that bad, so on the second sit we added the second skull with cross bones and adding daisies (get it? pushing up daisies) to the original skull. One of those things about being heavily tattooed is that we start to see empty spaces that need filling. Then, once it is filled in, there seems to be other smaller spaces around it. I think both of these will be getting added on to in the near future.  skull boob tattoo skull boob tattoo Adding on to Natasha’s (not a) sleeve. LOVE the passion flowers and have a great time visiting with Natasha 🙂 We will be adding more on to the upper part of this to tie everything in.  floral sleeve tattoo

I think that brings us pretty much to current. Thanks for bearing with my ramblings and the long gap in posts.

Jeff Hein Workshop days 3, 4 & 5

•September 1, 2015 • Leave a Comment

Since the progress on the portraits was much slower going in the tightening phase – I have grouped the last three days into one post. This is not to say that I didn’t learn a ton during those three days. I actually think that as the week went on and Jeff got to feel more comfortable and know us all – he opened up and was very helpful to each of us on a personal level.

I highly recommend either taking his workshop or at the very least picking up the DVD of Cold, which is very well done and shows everything step by step with thorough explanations.
