Today’s Lesson in Tattoo Stencils

•January 30, 2010 • Leave a Comment

Apparently if I draw up the line work for an entire backpiece on tracing paper using a Col-erase black pencil and then try to make a stencil from it, it doesn’t work. The stencil machine will pick up nothing. Even when I tired to photocopy it first the stencil came up mysteriously blank.

Lesson learned.

Unfortunately this means that I then had to send home my appointment with no ink actually on her skin. On the bright side, she loved the drawing and was very understanding about the whole thing.

It’s one of those days where the belief that “things go the way they are supposed to go” gets put to the test. So now I have some free time which is a good thing. It would be a better thing if I was one of those people who know what to do with free time.

Litany Against Fear

•January 20, 2010 • 3 Comments

I’m a packrat. I am disorganized. Because of this I sometimes find things that I have tucked away and don’t really know where they came from. Today I found this in a drawer while looking for the photoshop disk that I have lost (and found) probably a dozen times now.

I don’t know where it came from. I don’t know if one of the tattoo client’s left it behind or if was specifically left for me…. but it came back to me when I needed it.

I scanned it instead of typing it back out because I like the scribbles on it.

Warm Summer Nights

•January 13, 2010 • Leave a Comment

They’ve been talking about the Groundhog again on the news. How much longer is winter going to last? Will he see his shadow?

I guess this year the little critter has learned to text 🙂 and if you sign up they will text his results from his big day right to your cell phone. I’m going to refrain from commenting about how I feel about all that…. but it is only January and I have honestly and truly seen it snow into the first week of June here – so I am not going to start counting days until spring. (When I can’t take it anymore I will just go and visit some of my friends in NC – they have really real Springs down there – the kind like you see on the Easter cards where everything is pretty and bright green and there are flowers everywhere)

But for those of you who are having a hard time – I thought that I would bring you one of my summer night memories.

My Grandmother was an avid gardener. Loved to garden. You would think having grown up on a farm might of cured her of that – but nope. She loved flowers mostly but was known to grow strawberries and rhubarb as well.

One day one of her cousins handed her a coffee can with some plants in it and told her to take them home and plant them and see what happened. Since this particular cousin was a known prankster – Grandma was pretty sure that the plants were weeds and they did indeed look a whole lot like dandelions. But being curious (and trusting) she took them home and planted them. They wound up being what she called forever after “moon flowers”. They blossom at night – right at dusk and open quickly enough on the extra hot days that you can hear them pop open and watch the petals unfurl. Grandma loved these flowers. Many summer nights at Grandma’s house my sister or I would be brought out to the deck to see how many had opened that night. On nights when there were two Grandma took polaroids to show them off. The morning sun destroys the blooms and you never know how many you are going to get on a given night.

When my Grandfather developed Alzheimer’s some things got lost. One of the things that he lost was how these particular plants look when they are small and over the course of one spring he weeded them out of the garden.

Grandma was of course devastated and wanted to replace them. So off I go with polaroids in hand to try and find these flowers. I find out a whole lot about night blooming flowers and Victorian night gardens. I visit a lot of garden centers and ask a lot of questions. No one seems to know what they are. I turn to the internet and periodically try and figure out what these things are. It turns out that they are Stemless Evening Primrose and they grow wild in parts of the South (like Texas sort of south). Down there they consider them kind of a weed and no one pays them any attention.

Which leads us to a new problem. How do you buy a weed? It’s not like you can go online and buy something that people are trying to kill out of their gardens.

Around this time the decision is made that the house needs to be sold and things need to be cleaned out and moved. It’s getting late in the year – but we try to transfer some of the plants out of the garden and over to some of the rest of the family’s places so that we can all grow memories of Grandma & Grandpa’s house. My sister makes one last ditch effort to find some of the moonflowers that have not been weeded out and there are about three teeny plants in there. No way these are going to make it – but we have to try. Since Sarah lives far away I am elected keeper of the orphan plants. With a whole lot of trepidation I accept this responsibility with very little hope of success.

Spring comes – two of the plants have made it. Summer comes and the plants are thriving. Years later I have nights where there are more than a dozen blossoms on a single night. I bring photos of these up to Grandma at the nursing home. My husband and I spend nights watching them open – much to the confusion of the kids. We are able to share some of the plants with friends and family – always with the story of how much Grandma loved them. So if you are by some summer night around dusk – look for me in the garden dreaming of Grandma and Grandpa’s house and creating my own family memories.

Introspection

•January 11, 2010 • 2 Comments

I do a lot of thinking. By most folks account, way too much thinking. I guess that is a matter of opinion.

<insert appropriate quote>

“Yes, know thyself: in great concerns or small, Be this thy care, for this, my friend, is all.” ~ Juvenal

I take that to mean that there are other people out there doing the same thing. Trying to examine our own motives – to not be a hostage to our gut instincts, but to rise above them and learn more. More about ourselves, and hopefully more about the world around us.

For me, I do this with the end goals of: being happier, being more loving & less reactive and to be a blessing in the lives of those around me. I know that has a lot of religious sounding overtones to it and so I try not to discuss my philosophy of life with those who are uninterested and/or would misinterpret it. I do not want to convert anyone (although I do love debates and when some one can change my point of view). I am just trying to do what most everyone else is – the best that I can with the tools that I have available to me. (Actually technically speaking since I don’t have an organized religion I couldn’t convert anyone anyhow… but I stray off topic….)

Bottom line. I would like to be happy. If it is possible, I would like to see those around me happy.

Recently someone blindsided me with some “facts” about myself. Pointed out some things that I had done that hurt them terribly. I have done what I can to make amends for these actions. I owned them and believe that I have made some changes that will keep that particular hurt from being inflicted on anyone again.

It has brought up a lot of questions for me. I have been looking at myself and my motivations and my actions. Where else have I been hurtful and did not know? How can I correct behaviors that I am not aware of? Are these facts or fears? I have heard it said that “no one chooses a course of evil, they simply mistake it for the pursuit of happiness”. <would insert credit for the quote if I could figure out who said it> Have I been angry, hurtful or mean? Or have I been misinterpreted? Am I trying to accept too much responsibility for other people’s pain?

For me, there is no change without pain. Once again the Universe has seen fit to bring me a lesson that hurts. Once the pain is greater than the fear than the change comes – but I am just having so much difficulty figuring out the fear in this one.

I hope the understanding comes soon – this is getting old.

Biting Tattoos

•December 16, 2009 • 4 Comments

I know that whenever a tattoo gets published either in print or online, there is a chance that it is going to be copied. I understand this. Still, it is frustrating to see work that was custom made for one individual placed on another.

This is a tattoo that I did many years ago. I have had innumerable inquiries from people looking to have the same tattoo done or asking me if they can buy the stencil. I have consistently refused since the tattoo was done to very exact specifications for the client. Today this tattoo was brought to my attention:

I don’t even know how I am supposed to feel about it. I know that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery – but come on. The hanged men represented something really specific to the guy wearing the original tattoo – the people who I have personally talked to about copying it just thought they looked cool. I wonder if this person even wondered what they were there to represent?

Most of the time when someone steals a tattoo the saving grace that we have is that they are a hack. Normally it is only new artists or artists with no scruples who copy other artists work. This one was actually pretty well done.

Is the economy that bad that we are reduced to stealing one another’s custom work? Or did the other artist not realize this was a custom tattoo? I guess these are questions that I will never know the answers to.

When I have some time I will gather together some copies of some of my more stolen tattoos to accompany this one.

This one I did some time in the early to mid nineties. It has been duplicated so many times that I am convinced that it has to be on a flash sheet somewhere.

and a couple of the ones that I found doing a google image search:

I found another one today. Here is the tattoo that I did:

Another update. December 2011. Apparently for some “artists” taking someone elses custom tattoo and duplicating it on your client is just TOO much work. So this guy didn’t bother. He just took my photo and posted it in his portfolio as an “in progress” custom piece.

Facebook made him take it down so I have blocked out his name.

I very much enjoyed this tattoo and the lady who is wearing it. Hope to see more of the both of them in the future.

Self Promotion

•December 7, 2009 • Leave a Comment

As a business owner I think that when I suggest to others that they self-promote the impression that they get is that I am being stingy or selfish and don’t want to be bothered to do it for them. So I would like to address this issue primarily from the stand point of a tattoo collector with a few dashes of shop owner thrown in (just because I can’t completely shut myself off from the other parts of me, even when I want to).

How do I pick the artists that I get tattooed by? Obviously their artwork is a primary consideration. Sometimes I have particular projects in mind and I am looking for an artist to do them and other times I meet someone who I would really like to get tattooed by and I then start trying to figure out a project that will fit their style.

Now if an artist is someone who I am trying to find a project for – this would be someone who I encountered along the way and like them and their art. Usually someone that I have met at a convention or is a friend of a friend. Basically a friend or likable acquaintance who I would like to be tattooed by. This variety is pretty easy.

The other kind is a bit more tricky. This is an artist who’s work I have seen first before I have met them. I have seen their work online or in magazines and their style seems like it would work well for a project that I have in mind. Then the investigation begins. Is this person accessible geographically? Is it possible to get an appointment with them? Will I have to sell a limb to get a tattooed by them? The answers to these questions will not keep me from trying to set up an appointment, but they will give me an idea what I need to do to prepare for that appointment. The more difficult the solutions, the more I have to like the person’s work to keep going through with the process. And then the last item of investigation – what type of person is this? Usually I will ask around and if possible try to meet them in person at a show. On occasion I have phoned to reach out to an artist. That interaction will then determine if I am willing to spend my money, travel for the appointment and go through the stalking process that some artists require. We all have bad days, and while it is entirely possible that some of the people who I have crossed off my potential artist list have been judged unfairly or harshly – that’s just how it goes. I am sure that I have pissed off MORE than my share of potential customers over the years. Most of the time I figure that things go the way that they are supposed to go. It may be that at some point in the future I will give this person another chance, but for now it just isn’t time for us to connect.

From there I would like to tell you a story. I have changed the names and tried to remove any specifics who would let you know who these folks are (other than myself).

Mike and I have been tattooing for about the same amount of time. He started maybe a couple of years before me and we came up through the convention circuit at roughly the same time. Since I was busy being a single parent at the time, my time on the road and doing guest spots was pretty limited. Mike however hit every convention that he could for a long time. He sent his stuff into magazines. Found a niche and became a name that you would recognize immediately. He is a fantastic artist and a really nice guy. I had talked about getting tattooed by Mike for a long time, but we never could hook up at a convention. I eventually decided to go ahead and book an appointment at his shop.

The tattooing and the subsequent tattoo went as you would expect and I have a beautiful tattoo from the trip. While getting tattooed we of course talked and visited. Compared notes on life. Gossiped a little bit and caught up. In talking to Mike I asked about the other people at his shop. Most of whom are also very well known and respected in the industry. Again names that you would know if you are familiar with tattooing at all. We got to talking about one of the other guys in particular and what is up with him these days. We’re going to call him Al for the story. Al was also a sweetheart of the convention circuit. One of those guys who gets listed up near the top when conventions advertise who is going to be there. I figured that he would be just as booked out as Mike was and certainly more than me. It turns out that Al is doing tribal arm bands these days. I was shocked. How could that be? Mike said that Al never bothers to do anything to promote himself. He doesn’t send stuff into magazines, he doesn’t take photos and he just waits for whatever comes in the door to come to him…. and like most of us, what walks in the door isn’t always that exciting to do. It really really freaked me out that an artist of this caliber would be sitting around most days doing nothing and only working on flash designs when he was working.

Thinking about Al made me analyze what it was that I was doing in my own career to promote myself. How I am connecting with potential clients? Why am I working and Al isn’t? Which artists at my shop are busiest? Which ones are complaining about the clients and the projects that they get?

I hadn’t really thought of myself as an active self-promoter, but came to realize that some of the things that I had been doing all along had done just that. I started to be more diligent about updating my photos online. Started looking for other free websites to add my pictures to and promote for free. And I started to send stuff into magazines again.

While the magazines have not worked out so well (mostly due to my mediocre skills as a photographer), the online photos have helped a great deal. I have clients who I meet up with at conventions or come to see me in the shop from great distances. Which is of course flattering, but I only mention because it illustrates a different point entirely. The projects that many of these folks are bringing me are tattoos that I am excited about doing. They are fun projects and stuff that is “right up my alley”. Why? Because I put myself out there and let the public know what my alley is. This does not mean that everyone who walks in the door looking for me is presenting a dream project. In fact, I still regularly turn down projects when someone else can do a better job with it than I can. And it certainly doesn’t mean that everyone who contacts me is a really nice person (but fortunately heaps of them ARE). What it means is that I have a more diversified client base who bring me a wide range of projects that keeps tattooing fresh, exciting and fun for me. I never was (and don’t want to be) a niche artist. I don’t want to be known for one particular style or one particular subject matter. I think I would get bored if that was the way that I worked.

So if wherever you are and whoever you work for (even if it is yourself): If someone suggests to you that you get your work, your face and/or your ideology out there to the masses… we are just trying to help you be happy. To hopefully help you find clients that you can be excited about working with. Or you can wait and see what walks in the door and hope that maybe this time it will be something fun.

(or you can make it fun, even if it isn’t… but that’s another whole blog).

Tattoo Scams?!? What’s Next?

•December 4, 2009 • 20 Comments

I get a lot of email. Like most of us the vast majority of it is spam, but mixed in are always customer inquiries and legitimate emails. So every day I read through all of them. Delete most and respond to the ones that I can.

The other day I got the following email.

Greetings!

My name is Chris Owen, we have a film to shoot in your location and we need a crew of the actors and the actreses to be tattoo. We wish to confirm that you can be able to handle the the tattooing. We will come to your studio/shop for the tattooing on 15th Feb 2010 once everything is concluded. Please let me know if you are interest to tattoo this group. I will give you further details as soon as I hear back from you.

Warm regards,

Chris Owen
E-mail: chrisowen54@hotmail.com

I didn’t really think much of it. The email had obviously been sent out to a large group of “undisclosed recipients”. I don’t know what made me write back. Perhaps that I was sure that they were not really a client and I wanted to be testy with someone (I know for other people this isn’t really testy, but I would not talk to a client this way… well except for once, but that is another story).

Chris,

You obviously sent this out generically… so I have to ask.

What are you talking about?

TeeJay

This morning, much to my surprise, I received a reply:

Hello teejay,

Thanks for your response. Find below the art you are going to tattoo on the crew.

The crew will arrive on: 13th Feb 2010.
Starting date for tattooing the crew: 15th Feb 2010.
Number of crew to be tattooed: 18 (12 men and 6 ladies)
They have 7 days for the tattooing I hope that the time is enough for you.

You will have to tattoo the 18 crew members, 12 men will be tattooed the attached bee on the two sides of their upper arms then the ladies will be tattooed just on the left side of their upper arm.

Tattoo Colour: Grey
Size: Sizable according to the persons size of arm.

As you can see the attached picture all we need is just simple tattoo. You will need to give all of them the same look of tattoo because it will be use for the cult identification in the film we will be shooting in your location.

Kindly get back to me with details and other relevant questions if you have any. Feel free to call at any time +44-702-409-3067 I need to have your grand cost for undertaking this project.

I await your response.

Warm regards,

Chris.

With the attached image:

Now at this point I know that something is not right. So I google the phone number. I find a number of scams involving recording studios. Different names, different bands but basically the same story over and over again.

They make initial contact. Reserve recording time. Mail a large check to cover the studio time. The check is deposited and “clears” and then something happens. Generally one of the band members dies and they have to cancel and will need the money refunded. Weeks later it turns out that the check was not actually valid and they are happily gone with the marks money.

Nice.

I have heard of these kind of scams before, but have to wonder what the world is coming to when they are trying to scam tattoo shops?  I just have to hope that we are a cynical enough bunch that no one falls for it.

So just for grins and giggles I sent off a reply email this morning to see if I hear back from them:

Chris,

I have to admit that I am more than a little bit confused.
If you are filming a movie, why are you actually tattooing the images instead of using make-up? And the image that you sent me is not a bee, it’s a scarab. So I am thinking that if you would like to make something permanent on your actor’s bodies you might want to do a little bit more research on it.
And lastly, if for some reason you actually would like to do this and are serious – we could tattoo all 18 people in one day. It’s not a big deal.
Much curious,
TeeJay
I don’t actually expect to hear back from them, but if I do, I will be sure to let you know.

Update. I did receive a note back today – but it just isn’t even anywhere in the realm of believable, so I’m not going to bother to play anymore. I thought that I might see if I could take it far enough to get a check from them and then just not deposit it…. but they took all the fun out of it today.
This is the note that I got back.
Hello TeeJay,I got your mail, please send in your quote as the crew like the tattoo I have discuss with them.Warm regards,Chris.

——————-

Update – I got another one today. (March 24th, 2010) Different spiel, but looks like the same deal.

Here is todays:

GOOD DAY

WE ARE MUSICAL GROUP OF ABOUT TWELVE DANCERS AND WE WANT A TATOO EXPERT THAT CAN HELP US TO CREAT AN EXCEPTIONAL TATOO DESIGN.

SO WE WOULD WANT TO KNOW THE FOLLOWING THINGS AND WE WOULD WANT YOU TO RESPOND AS SOON AS POSSIBLE SO THAT WE CAN PRESS FORWARD FOR OUR VISA TO YOUR DOMAIN.

PLEASE ANSWER THIS QUESTION BELLOW

(1) How long will it take you to inflict tatoo on 12 people
(2) How is the cost for one person
(3) Where exactly is your studio in
(4) Would there be any discount fo as many as 12 people

REGARDS .
DON JAZZY

—————–

And once again, a less than professional response:

Don,

Thank you for your inquiry. Although slightly confusing and/or suspect, I will attempt to answer your questions anyhow.

1 – I do not inflict tattoos on people, I make tattoos for people. Without knowing what I would be making I could not give you an estimate on how long it would take.

2 – again, cost for a tattoo is dependent on what it is and how long it will take.

3- I have two studios, one is at 466 West Ridge Road Rochester NY 14615 and the other is at 1205 Ridge Road Webster NY 14580

4- again, I could not hazzard a guess as to price estimates without more information as to what it is that you are looking to have done.

Please let me know if you have any further questions,

TeeJay

—————-

This morning I received a reply and an image. These folks are doing better than the last ones… Here is their email:

Thanks for your mail;  my name is LISSA i am don jazzy group secretary this is the design we have but if you have something better and at a reasonable price, you can send me the costing of the total some for the design per person so that we can arrange and get back to you as soon as possible and you can also arrange to book us towards the last week on april.

and writing back to them :

Lissa,

Regrettably I do not have any appointments available that soon. My first available is towards the end of July. In addition, since this design is tribal inspired (and not my forte) – I would suggest that another artist might be better suited for what you have in mind.

My portfolio is primarily realistic based tattoos. http://www.whitetigertattoo.com/artists/teejay/teejayart1.html

Please let me know if you have any questions or if there is anything else that I can do for you.

Thanks,

TeeJay
