Hell City – Wet Paint Project – 2012
The last Wet Paint Project that I was able to attend was at Mad Hatter Remains in February of 2011 the link for that one is HERE. Also the last tattoo convention that I tattooed at was Hell City the last time it was in Ohio. Hell City is as far as I know the best convention going in the States. All that being said, I had a pretty good idea what I was getting myself involved in and was super excited to attend.
We left Rochester in the middle of some weird butterfly event – that while feeling magical when we were home turned into the Great Butterfly Massacre once we were on the Highway. Fortunately it was not a bad Omen of things to come. We arrived at the Hotel on Thursday night and after snacks crashed out for the night.
Friday morning we went out exploring and checked out the North Market which Paul and I somehow missed the last time we were in Columbus. Great food and plenty of options for everyone.
Friday when we headed over to the convention area a few of the artists had already set up.
Holly and I picked out our spot and dove right in. Holly owns Always and Forever in Watertown, Mass Holly Azzara
Instead of bringing the paintings with me that I had started in this series (since I feel they needed too much corrections at this point) I just brought blank canvases and started them over again.
While most of us would be painting this weekend – Holly opted to work in another medium
More artist began arriving and starting on their chosen projects for the weekend:
I found this bunny and decided he should come live with me. $15 of happiness.
Holly’s hand project finished up.
Chloe Vanessa and Phil Young setting up. Chloe works at Off the Map in Massachusetts. CHLOE Phil works at Hope Gallery in New Haven, CT PHIL
Some of Holly’s skulls. These were Holly’s “Wet Paint” for the weekend.
This is Scott W Prior he is a “Painter of Stuff” and was at Hell City to paint Chet Zar working. I don’t know that Scott knew what he was getting himself into – but he fit right in and was a great addition to the project. Scott W Prior
Bad things were happening to Barbies all weekend at Holly’s hands
A better shot of Holly’s hand Project which I was fortunate enough to be able to adopt and take home with me at the end of the weekend.
Another shot of Scott painting next to Chet’s work in progress
That was it for Friday night. In looking at the photos on the camera back at the room, I decided that I wasn’t happy with the curve on the sternum and wanted to correct it first off in the morning (well, tattoo guy morning which is about 1:00 pm).
Toby Gehrlich form Stained Skin in Ohio was our neighbor for the weekend on one side. TOBY
And Piew Choquette was on the other side. Piew tattoos at Tatouage Royal in Montreal. He works primarily as a Traditional Style Tattoo Artist, but chooses to paint in a more realistic manner.

Holly added flowers near my bird
Random photo of cotton wood fluff in the clover and grass. No reason. Just thought that it looked cool.
Stephan Lanphear (from Lefty’s World Famous) and I have been alternating working on Holly’s left arm. It was my turn and this is hat we worked on Sunday.
Goodbyes after weekends like this are hard. So many great people. It’s hard to say good bye and walk back into the real world day to day grind. Monday morning was much hugging and exchanging contact info. New friend requests on Facebook. New friends to follow on Twitter and Instagram and running around trying to catch everyone we might have missed.
Back on the road for a pretty uneventful trip home. Saw a small trailer fire and stayed well stocked up on Starbuck’s for the ride home:
Back to reality (or as close to it as I normally reside)
Here is a photo that was taken of the group painting after we left on Sunday
and a list of the artists that were supposed to be in attendance:
I am exceptionally grateful to have been given the opportunity to work with all of these amazing artists. Hoping to be able to attend future Wet Paint get togethers as well. Thank you to everyone in attendance and everyone I was able to visit with who was working on the Main Tattoo floor.
Much love and hugs,
TeeJay
sweet! looks like you had a great time again. i really, really like the painting of the porch with the pinatas.
also, i began following random people from the Hell City Instagram account in hopes to see pictures of you, and ironically, somehow stumbled across Holly, so I got to see the pics of you working on the cat piece.
